Doctor Explains Link Between High Blood Sugar and GI Infections in Diabetics, with Prevention Tips

For individuals with type 2 diabetes, high blood sugar can lead to various complications. Dr. Subbiah, a consultant general surgeon at Prashanth Hospitals, Chennai, explained that elevated blood glucose levels can weaken the immune system, making diabetic patients more vulnerable to gastrointestinal (GI) infections. One key factor is the disruption of gut microflora, which encourages harmful microorganisms to grow, increasing infection risk. Additionally, conditions like gastroparesis, which slows stomach emptying, create a breeding ground for bacterial overgrowth.

Dr. Subbiah also highlighted the dangers of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious condition that can lead to dehydration, vomiting, confusion, and potentially death if untreated.

To prevent GI infections and other complications, Dr. Subbiah recommends maintaining proper blood sugar control through regular doctor visits, a healthy diet, avoiding alcohol and smoking, practicing good hygiene, and exercising. He also emphasized that uncontrolled diabetes can delay symptom onset in conditions like appendicitis and gallbladder infections, leading to more complications and slower recovery. Timely medical intervention is crucial for managing both infections and high blood sugar levels.
